Phones are dirty...Very dirty

Take a second to think about where you take your phone. Do you take it with you on public transport? Do you take it with you in the kitchen? The bathroom? The bedroom?

Now how often do you clean your phone? Not a lot right?

The average person picks up their phone 80 times per day, so whatever bacteria you might have on your hands will then be present on your phone. You can easily wash your hands to get rid of the bacteria. We’ve now been taught the proper way is to wash our hands for at least 20 seconds with warm water and antibacterial soap, or you can sing happy birthday, much to the dismay of anyone within listening distance.

One of the hard truths is, the average mobile phone carries around 10 times as much bacteria as the average toilet seat. Don’t immediately read this and throw your phone away, they’re not all bad bacteria, although some might be. There are a number of factors influencing the drastic difference between your phone and toilet seat. Toilet seats are generally cleaned more often than your phone and your phone is subjected to numerous different environments.

How often should you clean your phone?

Under normal circumstances, it is unlikely that a very harmful bacteria will live on your device, but to make sure you keep healthy, 2-3 times per week is a good amount to clean your device. Every day would be the ideal amount.

Under current circumstances, you might want to be a little more vigilant. It wouldn’t be terrible to wipe your phone every time you wash your hands, or at least after any time you could come into contact with coronavirus, for instance, after a trip to the supermarket, park etc.

How should you clean your phone?

Tech firms such as Apple and Samsung advise against using regular bleach or surface wipes because they can damage the protective surfaces of your phone, especially the one on your touch screen! Instead, try to use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe. Alternatively, you could use the Kutjo Antibacterial Screen Cleaning Kit.

Specifically designed to use on your mobile devices, the Kutjo kit is a small, pocketsized antibacterial spray that houses a microfiber cloth to wipe the device dry, making it easy and convenient to disinfect your phone at home or on the go.
